ABOUT THE EVENT
Join us for an evening of film, storytelling, and community as we celebrate 18 years of ReelAbilities. We are proud to honor ReelAbilities' founder, Anita Altman, whose vision and leadership shaped ReelAbilities into a movement where disabled voices and communities are celebrated, amplified, and empowered.
This intimate celebration supports the next chapter of ReelAbilities as we continue to expand our reach and impact during a pivotal time for disability advocacy and arts funding. Together, we’ll champion authentic disability representation in film and the arts and ensure that disability voices remain at the forefront—illuminating the stories that move and connect us all.

HONORING ANITA ALTMAN
Anita Altman is a native New Yorker, who was raised in a working‐class Greek Jewish community in the East Bronx. She is a proud product of New York City’s public schools, earning her undergraduate degree from the City College of New York. In 2014, Altman was awarded the City Colleges' Alumni Association's Townsend Harris medal for her post-graduate achievements.
Anita has had a distinguished career in public service as a city planner and for almost three decades as a Jewish communal professional on the staff of the UJA-Federation of New York. During her tenure there, she functioned as a change-agent: developed and secured funding for a Jewish communal response to the AIDS epidemic; championed the organizing of supportive services in Naturally Occurring Retirements Communities (NORCs) to help enable seniors to remain living in their own homes as they grew older and more frail; put the issue of family violence in the Jewish community on the communal agenda; and in partnership with the J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation, helped build a vast array of services for people with disabilities and their families with UJA-Federation’s member agencies. The recognition that there is a profound need to help transform societal attitudes about people with disabilities and that film could help play an instrumental role was the genesis for ReelAbilities.
As co-founder of the ReelAbilities Film Festival, Anita has helped foster awareness, inclusion, and appreciation of people with disabilities through film and storytelling. Tonight, we honor her visionary leadership, tireless advocacy, and enduring commitment to building inclusive communities.
