Josh Sapan

Former CEO, AMC Networks
Josh Sapan has been one of the driving forces behind shows that ushered in the era of “prestige television.” During his 25 years as CEO, AMC Networks became known for groundbreaking series including Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Portlandia, The Night Manager, and Top of the Lake.
He started IFC Films, the bricks & mortar IFC Center and brought the company early into streaming with Sundance Now, Shudder and AMC + streaming services.
After departing AMC in early 2023, he launched Sapan Studio. In partnership with IFC Films, Sapan Studio backed The Taste of Things, which won Best Director at Cannes Film Festival - and Ghostlight and The Baltimorons both named to the list of the year’s best independent films by the National Board of Review in their year of release Sapan Studio has a first-look television production deal and has invested in foreign-language streaming services and emerging media ventures.
He is the author of four books: Cable TV (Putnam), The Big Picture: America in Panorama and Third Act (PA Press/Chronicle Books), and RX, a book of poetry published by Red Hen Press.
In the nonprofit world, he serves on the boards of the American Film Institute, The New School, New York Public Radio, the Museum of the Moving Image, The Public Theater, and People for the American Way.
In 2023 he contributed the movie theater he owned for 18 years to ignite the formation of The North Fork Arts Center in Greenport NY.
He is the founder of Marvels of Media, an annual event celebrating the work of autistic media makers with a festival and exhibition centered at The Museum of The Moving Image which recently completed its fifth year.
